Although smashing your fitness goals and having a healthy routine feels great, life is all about balance. Every once in awhile, it’s important to let your hair down and shake your tail feather. It’s time to put down the carrot sticks and grab your glow sticks!

Steeped in history and bustling with attitude - Amsterdam is, without a doubt, one of the best cities to visit in Europe. With everything from hipster-friendly brunch spots and vintage stores, to beautiful parks and stunning architecture, there’s plenty to keep you busy. But, as with any city, there are a few things you need to know before booking a trip.

While the famous “I am Amsterdam” sign is no longer there, it was just one of the many iconic experiences to be had.

To make sure your stay is a groovy one, check out my TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN AMSTERDAM

1. Explore by Bike

Amsterdam is known as the cycling capital of the world, meaning a visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a spot of cycling. Yes, it can be a little hairy at times but hiring a bike and meandering around is by far, the best ways to explore the city.

Just remember to keep your wits about you, the locals are experts at cycling and aren’t afraid to ring their bells or shout at you if you slow them down!

2. Do a Canal Tour

With over 165 picturesque canals and waterways, another great way to discover the city is by boat. Although there are plenty of canal tour companies, it’s much more fun to hire your own boat and go at your own pace. All aboard! For a link to boat rental companies in Amsterdam click here.

The I amsterdam City Card is an affordable way to hop on a cruise through the famous canals of Amsterdam or you can go solo.

It is equally beautiful if you go on foot or by bike too. Just plan plenty of time to snap pics as you go!

3. Shop till you Drop

From exclusive boutiques and vintage shops to a vast array of your favourite Highstreet stores, there are many places around the city to get your retail fix. Head to Dam Square, Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat for department stores or if you’re looking for something a little fancier then I recommend Haarlemmerdijk.

4. See a show in the Red Light District

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably heard about Amsterdam’s Red-Light District. Although it’s a little seedy and can get really busy, it’s definitely worth a visit. If you’re feeling adventurous why not go and see a live sex show? Or for those less into hanky-panky perhaps a visit to the sex museum?

5. Do as the Dutch Do

As well as cheese and windmills, the Dutch are famed for their liberal attitude towards soft drugs. As soon as you get off the train at central Station, you’re likely to catch a whiff of ‘jazz cabbage’ (Ganja, weed, puff). Although getting stoned isn’t for everyone, it’s definitely worth a try while you’re in the European capital of weed! There are lots of coffeeshops to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with a visit to one of the more established chains like the Bulldog Cafes. If you haven’t got high before I recommend starting small!

There you have it, my top tips on what to do in Amsterdam. Before you go one last tip – Amsterdam can get super busy at the weekends, so if you don’t like crowds I recommend visiting during the week. No matter the weather, there’s always loads of cool stuff going on.
